"You're Prettier When You Smile #8" Original Painting
This original one of one 8x8" painting is the 8th piece in my running series, "You're Prettier When You Smile" and was created in my Downtown Phoenix studio. This series explores the idea of women not existing for the male gaze. I got the idea for this series when a woman told me one day that I should not get a gold grill (gold teeth) as they were ugly and "not pretty" on women. So, not only did I get my gold grill as I intended *flips hair*, I set out to paint as many women with gold grills as possible.
The history of gold grills in Black American Culture is rooted in turning pain and poverty into power. It is a story all too familiar in our society. So, whenever you see me paint a gold grill, know that I am displaying the power and value in our voices. I am painting empowerment.
