Exhibition Description — Welcome to the Circus

Welcome to the Circus opens May 8th and is free and open to the public. This solo exhibition introduces a new body of work by artist Antoinette Cauley that centered on the artist's experience navigating an extremely mentally and emotionally abusive relationship. This work serves as a powerful visual internal metaphor: the artist’s central nervous system imagined as an inner child trapped inside a circus.

Within this world, survival depends on performance and safety relies on compliance. The works reflect the experience of being pushed to constantly adapt, appease, and shape-shift—performing versions of the self in order to run from abandonment. Beneath the spectacle lies a quieter reality: a dysregulated inner landscape where the most vulnerable part of the self is left to navigate abuse, confusion, pressure, pain and emotional instability alone.

Through this lens, the exhibition explores what it means to recognize that inner child—not as something distant, but as something actively experiencing and responding to harm. The process of reflection becomes an act of reconnection: learning to step in, to protect, and to rebuild trust within oneself after periods of self-abandonment. The circus transforms from a place of chaos into a site of awareness, where survival strategies are reexamined and protection becomes intentional.

In connecting this work to the mission of Kaity’s Way, part of New Life Center, the exhibition extends beyond Cauley’s personal narrative to support education and prevention around unhealthy relationship dynamics. To honor the memory of Kaity Sudberry (a teen whose life was taken in an act of domestic violence in Phoenix in 2008) a percentage of all art and merchandise sales will be donated to the organization to help educate teens and adult allies on how to recognize and identify the patterns of abuse.

Visitors can expect a new collection of original works, prints, and merchandise, alongside music and the opportunity to meet the artist. Welcome to the Circus invites viewers to consider the roles they’ve played to survive—and what it means to finally step out of the ring and choose protection over performance.
