The painting you see here is part of my Berlin-based series, You're Prettier When You Smile. This body of work critically addresses society's obsession with women being aesthetically pleasing, often at their own expense, leading to harassment and even violence. It challenges the notion that women exist solely for the enjoyment of others.
This particular piece is deeply personal, as it celebrates Roicia, an Afro-Indigenous woman who embodies both cultures with grace and strength. I started this piece unsure of its direction but, trusting my inner compass, it evolved into a powerful visual narrative.

The Berlin debut of "I Do It For The Hood"
Debuting at I Do It For The HOOD in Berlin, this painting tells the story of Roicia’s dual heritage. The turquoise grill in her mouth symbolizes the fusion of her cultures, while also representing the powerful voices of women like her.
During my exhibition in Berlin, I shared the shocking statistics behind the red hand symbol, representing Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Many in my European audience were unaware of the scale of this issue in the U.S. This revelation highlighted a crucial gap in awareness—both abroad and at home.

More about Roicia
Roicia Banks Stewart is a social worker, community leader, and founder of the Social Roots Foundation, dedicated to empowering underserved Indigenous and African American communities. Through her tireless efforts, she has created resources for BIPOC families, including her upcoming mental health summit for African American women in January.
Roicia’s advocacy extends beyond her community as she launched a scholarship fund in honor of her late mother, Bernice Kaibetony, who passed away from COVID-19. The Bernice Kaibetony Scholarship aids Black and Indigenous women pursuing careers in mental health.
A portion of the proceeds from limited edition prints of this painting will go to the Bernice Kaibetony Scholarship, supporting women entering the mental health field.
